Estancia's varsity girls soccer team suffered a loss against Costa Mesa High School on Tuesday, January 8th. This game is very important to Estancia's all-sports record as other teams including volleyball, waterpolo, and basketball lost to their rivals, so the stakes were high.
The game began in Mesa's favor as they scored the first goal within the first quarter. However, the Lady Eagles did not let this discourage them. They continued to fight and giving their all. By halftime, it was obvious the girls were exhausted, but did not want to go out without a fight. Costa Mesa held the lead with a score of 1-0 going into halftime.
Third quarter play opened up with junior, center forward, Desiree Mendoza, scoring a goal for Estancia. Tying the game 1-1. This lifted the energy completely and it was clear that the eagles brought intensity to the second half.
Going into the fourth quarter there were many opportunities for Estancia to score, but unfortunately none were made. Eventually, Costa Mesa scored the last goal, ending the game at 2-1. While it was not the results that were hoped for, Estancia did fight for it and have another chance to beat Mesa at the end of January. Senior, Katelyn Chesemore said, "It wasn't the win we wanted but I really think we have a chance in a couple weeks, we just need to keep up our hard work."Estancia will play Orange on January 10th at Jim Scott Stadium and will face off against Costa Mesa on January 30th at home.
